Who we are and how we can help
Speakeasy is a specialist aphasia charity based in Ramsbottom, Bury.
We are made up of a range of professionals and volunteers, many who themselves have aphasia, are involved in delivering support and therapy to people with aphasia and their families. All staff work part time: creatively and flexibly and tirelessly.
What we do
Speakeasy is for people living with aphasia. Our mission is to make a positive difference to the lives of people who have aphasia and their carers. To achieve this we provide support for people when they need it and for as long as they want it.
Our members help us to design our work so that we have a range of activities which suit people’s needs. These therapeutic activities are designed to assist with building skills and confidence, and improving communication.
Our History
In 1985 Speakeasy was established by speech and language therapist Stephanie Holland in Fairfield
Hospital to provide therapy for people with aphasia.
Over the last three decades it has evolved and adapted to the challenges faced by the changes in Health Services and approaches to therapy and support.
Now Speakeasy exists for people with aphasia and their carers, providing activity from within the community, working within an approach which focuses on developing and enhancing skills.
Our Members
All Speakeasy members are people with aphasia or are friends and relatives of people who have aphasia. Some carers get help from Speakeasy without their partners.
Anyone who needs help can make contact directly; it is not necessary to have a referral by a doctor or therapist. Members can choose which activities they want from Speakeasy.
Some members come regularly at least once a week; some come along for special projects or courses. Other people come to annual events or social trips on a less frequent basis. People choose what it is best for them!
How you can help
There a variety of ways in which you can help Speakeasy. You may wish to volunteer, or help raise much-needed funds.
