Introduction

This document provides details on how to access the speakeasy website content so that it can be edited or new posts can be added.

Instructions

Accessing WordPress

The website can be found at https://www.speakeasy-aphasia.org.uk
The WordPress product is used to create and edit website content. To access WordPress, click the following link: Speakeasy WebSite WordPress Login
The username and password for the account that is used to login can be found in Bitwarden – just search for “WordPress” in BitWarden.

If accessing the link results in a page showing an error message, try the following link instead:

Adding a new Post or editing an Existing Post

Refer to the following article: Adding a Post to the Speakeasy Website

Adding Shaped images to the web site

Some images on the Speakeasy web site have non rectangular shapes. Images can be shaped using Microsoft Word, by following the article: Shaping and cropping images.

Shapes can be rotated – the Speakeasy home page includes an example of multiple images using the same shape but the shape has been rotated through 180  degrees.  By default, if a shape contains an image and it is rotated, the image within it is also rotated. To prevent the image from being rotated, select the “Format Picture” option in Word. Right mouse click on the shape and select the  “Format shape” menu option, then select the bucket icon. In the “Fill” options below the bucket icon, find the Ensure the “Rotate with shape” option and make sure the option is checked.

Compressing the Space Used by an Image

This refers to the disk space used by the image, not the physical size – see the next section of this guide for modifying the physical size of an image.

It is important that web pages don’t contain images with very large disk space sizes – if people are browsing the site using a smartphone, large images can quickly eat into that user’s monthly data allowance. Before uploading to the Speakeasy web site, images can be processed so that they have a much smaller size, without any discernible reduction in image quality.

To reduce the size of an image, first navigate to the following site: Image Resizer tool

From the tool, click the “Select image “ dropdown list in the middle of the image sizer screen, then select the image that is to be resized.

Click the “Resize Image” button that then appears, then click the icon two to the right of the pencil icon, which is called “Compress this resized image”. Check the image looks OK, then click the “Download image” button” and save the image. The new image should be significantly smaller than the original. This file can then be uploaded to the web site.

Modifying the Physical Dimensions of an Image

The Image Resizer tool can also be used to modify the physical size of an image, rather than the disk space size. Using the resizer tool, select an image and upload it. Next, click the “As Percentage” tab to the left hand side of the image resizer tool and select a smaller percentage. The image can be further compressed using the instructions given above.
